Qualitative data analysis on interview transcripts: note 2 for Housing Studies students (also refer to note 1)

I now subject the following 3 interview transcripts for chatgpt to conduct a full qualitative data analysis (producing codes, categories and conceptual frameworks, all by chatgpt):

My request 1: "I would like you (chatgpt accessed via poe.com) to study the following three (semi-structured) interview transcripts [fake] and suggest 12 concepts from the these transcripts as an inductive coding exercise. Do indicate the supportive quotations for your identified concepts:

The background of the study: I am a part-time Housing Studies student, currently working on my Research Methods assignment on “how the present economic and demographic trends influence home ownership in Hong Kong:. For that I have conducted three interviews with my Hong Kong millennial friends on their views on “how the present economic and demographic trends influence his/her own home ownership plan in Hong Kong”. I posted the following three questions to them:

Question 1: “What is your view on how the present economic and demographic trends influence the house prices that directly concern you?”

Question 2: “How do the housing price trend and other factors that directly concern you affect your own home ownership plan?”

Question 3: “How do your home ownership plan and associated consideration affect your present quality of life and expected quality of life? Please be specific aspects of life are most affected in this regard.

The three transcripts:

Transcript 1:

Interviewee: Tony Cha:

Question 1: “What is your view on how the present economic and demographic trends influence the house prices that directly concern you?”:

I am too busy to read newspapers; so I rely on my favored KOL, Master Shum advice. In this case, I believe the Stock Market in Hong Kong will do very well while the housing market will deteriorate seriously in the near future. These predicted trends do affect my personal home ownership plan.

Question 2: “How do the housing price trend and other factors that directly concern you affect your own home ownership plan?”

Basically, I may consider to buy a nano flat in Hong Kong in a few years time. But, there are other factors to consider. I need to work hard and save up money with my girl friend (with a thrifty lifestyle) so that we are able to buy a nano flat in a few years' time. Master Shum predicts that the Hong Kong Stock Market will do well this year. So, I borrow money from my parents and use my saving all together to invest in the Stock Market in Hong Kong, so that I can gain more wealth speedily, thus, capable to buy a nano flat sooner. My parents promised to pass their flat to me after they pass away; however, after my mother passed away last year, my father got a girl friend who is trying to ask my father to pass his flat to her, instead of me. I am not sure whether my father will keep his promise to me.

Question 3: “How do your home ownership plan and associated consideration affect your present quality of life and expected quality of life? Please be specific aspects of life are most affected in this regard.”

My home ownership plan depends on a lot of whether my girl friend will ultimately marry me. Recently she told me that she is so fed up with always having lunch and dinner with me at McDonald. She also told me that she is thinking of going to Japan to a 1-year top-up degree programme in Archaeology. I still cannot figure out why it is worthwhile for her to do so. It does affect my confidence on my home ownership plan with her. I also feel very stressful because the Stock Market in Hong Kong fluctuates a lot recently.

Transcript 2:

Interviewee: Taylor Sit.

Question 1: “What is your view on how the present economic and demographic trends influence the house prices that directly concern you?”

My knowledge on the economic and demographic trends comes from my favoured KOL, Evergreen Si. It appears that the housing prices in Hong Kong will get somewhat lower in the near future. It could get better as the government will introduce favourable policy to support the healthy development of the Hong Kong housing market. More immigrants expected to Hong Kong will also boost up housing market performance in the near future. These trends make me feel more confident on my home ownership plan.

Question 2: “How do the housing price trend and other factors that directly concern you affect your own home ownership plan?”

Housing market trend is only one factor to consider. The parents of my boyfriend are rich. They mention that they will give an apartment to by boyfriend and me when we get married. Thus, I have no worries about home ownership in this regard.

Question 3: “How do your home ownership plan and associated consideration affect your present quality of life and expected quality of life? Please be specific aspects of life are most affected in this regard.”

The issue of home ownership does not concern me at all, as my boyfriend and I do not need to work hard and save hard to buy an apartment. My main problem is that my boyfriend is a heavy smoker and, recently, I am concerned about his poor health. I hope he will remain healthy when we get married in a few years’ time. Due to my worry about my boyfriend’s health, I am not able to sleep well recently.

Interviewee: Jenny So.

Question 1: “What is your view on how the present economic and demographic trends influence the house prices that directly concern you?”

I feel that there are conflicting news about the economic and demographic trends affecting the housing market in Hong Kong. To simplify the matter, I rely on the advice Fung Shui masters, notably LL Mak and MF So. They both hold negative views on the housing market in Hong Kong and refer to some economic and demographic statistics to support their Fung Shui analysis. I trust them more than Master Shum, anyway. Nevertheless, the Hong Kong housing market does not concern me much as my boyfriend, Tony Ja, is from Thailand. After marriage with him, I plan to emigrate to Thailand.

Question 2: “How do the housing price trend and other factors that directly concern you affect your own home ownership plan?”

While the Hong Kong housing market does not directly concern me, I need to have contingency plan. If I break up with my boyfriend, Tony Ja, I will invite my close friends, Ann Li and Mary Tai, who are my Housing Studies classmate, to buy a flat together in Sham Shui Pui. They both tell me that they do not have boyfriends and are not interested in getting married.

Question 3: “How do your home ownership plan and associated consideration affect your present quality of life and expected quality of life? Please be specific aspects of life are most affected in this regard.”

Presently, my home ownership plan is a trivial matter if I got married with my boyfriend, Tony Ja, and emigrate to Thailand. I do need to maintain my contingency plan to co-own an apartment with my two classmates. In this respect, I still need to work hard and save up money. My worry is that, I am not sure if I can get along well with Tony Ja’s parents if I have to live with them in Thailand. I am also worried that Ann and May may change their life plans later. Because of that, I feel experience life stress these days. Besides, Tony Ja appears to be more interested in Kung Fu than in me recently."

My handwritten version:

Explanation of the Framework:

Economic Influences on Housing: Economic conditions and demographic trends shape the housing market, affecting house prices and availability.

Market Perception and Confidence: Individuals' perceptions of the housing market, influenced by economic trends and advice from key opinion leaders (KOLs), affect their confidence in pursuing home ownership.

Personal and Relationship Dynamics: Personal relationships and family support play a crucial role in shaping individuals' home ownership plans, impacting decision-making and emotional well-being.

Home Ownership Planning: Based on their market confidence and personal circumstances, individuals formulate their home ownership plans, considering factors like savings, investment strategies, and future contingencies.

Quality of Life Considerations: Ultimately, the interplay of economic influences, market perceptions, and personal dynamics affects individuals' quality of life, shaping their overall satisfaction and stress levels related to home ownership.

This framework effectively links the categories, showing how external economic factors influence personal decisions and ultimately affect quality of life in the context of home ownership in Hong Kong."

My request 4: "The conceptual framework is quite linear in nature. Is it possible to construct a conceptual framework that could have a bit more linkages among the conceptual categories?"

The response from chatgpt is: "Absolutely! Here’s a more interconnected conceptual framework that illustrates the dynamic relationships among the five conceptual categories, highlighting how they influence and interact with each other:

My handwritten version:

Explanation of the Framework:

Economic Influences on Housing: Economic factors directly impact the housing market, shaping prices and availability. These influences also feed into how individuals perceive market conditions.

Market Perception and Confidence: This category not only reflects perceptions based on economic trends but also affects personal dynamics. Confidence levels can influence relationship decisions and future planning.

Personal and Relationship Dynamics: Relationships play a critical role in shaping home ownership plans. The dynamics within personal relationships can be affected by market perceptions (e.g., confidence in buying a home) and economic influences (e.g., parental support).

Home Ownership Planning: This planning process is influenced by both personal dynamics and market confidence. Individuals’ plans are shaped by their relationships and the perceived stability of the housing market.

Quality of Life Considerations: Quality of life is impacted by home ownership planning as well as personal and relationship dynamics. Stress or satisfaction with home ownership plans can feed back into personal dynamics, creating a cyclical effect.

Interconnections:

Economic Influences feed into Market Perceptions and can influence Personal Dynamics through discussions about finances.

Market Perception affects Home Ownership Planning, which in turn impacts Quality of Life.

Personal Dynamics can shape Market Perceptions as individuals discuss their concerns and aspirations with peers and family.

Quality of Life can influence Home Ownership Planning, as stress or satisfaction can alter commitment levels in relationships.

This framework provides a more holistic view, showing the complexities and interdependencies among the categories, reflecting the dynamic nature of home ownership considerations in Hong Kong."
