An example of asking AI to produce a concrete MBA research theme: on ESG policy and consumer buying behavior

An example of asking AI to produce a concrete MBA research theme: on ESG policy and consumer buying behavior

I am a part-time MBA student, currently trying to formulate a concrete research theme. My rough research theme is about the influence of companies' ESG policy on consumer preferences on the companies' shopping products in Hong Kong; also my additional preference is to also consider the following key words: gen z vs baby boomers, e-tailing, consumer buying behavior. Please suggest 3 concrete research themes for me to consider.

Here are 3 concrete research themes that fit your rough idea and also incorporate Gen Z vs Baby Boomers, e-tailing, and consumer buying behavior in Hong Kong.

1) ESG policy and e-tailing purchase intention across generations

Theme: The influence of companies’ ESG policies on consumers’ purchase intention in Hong Kong e-tailing platforms: a comparison of Gen Z and Baby Boomers.

Why it works:

·        It is focused on one clear outcome: purchase intention.

·        It fits your interest in e-tailing and allows a strong age-group comparison.

·        You can test whether ESG matters differently for Gen Z and Baby Boomers when shopping online.

Possible research question:

·        How do perceived ESG policies of online retailers affect purchase intention among Gen Z and Baby Boomers in Hong Kong?

2) ESG communication, trust, and buying behavior

Theme: How ESG communication by Hong Kong shopping brands shapes consumer trust and buying behavior in online retail: evidence from Gen Z and Baby Boomers.

Why it works:

·        This theme goes beyond awareness and examines trust as the mechanism linking ESG and buying behavior.

·        It is more academic because it looks at a possible causal path: ESG communication  trust  buying behavior.

·        It suits MBA research well because it has both managerial and consumer-behavior relevance.

Possible research question:

·        Does ESG communication increase consumer trust and, in turn, influence buying behavior in Hong Kong e-tailing?

3) ESG preference and willingness to pay in online shopping

Theme: The effect of companies’ ESG performance on willingness to pay and product preference among Gen Z and Baby Boomers in Hong Kong’s e-tailing market.

Why it works:

·        This is the most commercially practical theme.

·        It lets you study both product preference and willingness to pay, which are easy to justify in business terms.

·        It is especially useful if you want to compare whether younger and older consumers value ESG differently when price is involved.

Possible research question:

·        To what extent does perceived ESG performance influence willingness to pay a premium and product preference among Hong Kong consumers shopping online?

Which one is strongest

If you want the most balanced MBA dissertation topic, I would recommend Theme 2 because it gives you a clearer theoretical structure and a stronger model for analysis. If you want something more straightforward and easier to survey, Theme 1 is the simplest. If your supervisor prefers a topic with direct managerial implications, Theme 3 is very attractive.

Suggested final wording

If you want a polished dissertation-style title, you could use one of these:

·        The impact of corporate ESG policies on online consumer purchase intention in Hong Kong: a generational comparison between Gen Z and Baby Boomers

·        ESG communication, consumer trust, and e-tailing purchase behavior in Hong Kong

·        Corporate ESG performance and consumer willingness to pay in Hong Kong’s online retail market: evidence from Gen Z and Baby Boomers

A Hong Kong consumer survey suggests sustainability is already influencing buying choices, with many consumers willing to pay more for sustainable products and some even reducing purchases from brands seen as weak on sustainability. That makes your topic timely and locally relevant.
