An overview on proposal formulation for housing studies dissertations

An overview on proposal formulation for housing studies dissertations

Very often, students ask me if the proposal theme is OK or not OK; it is usually OK, but this is not enough. Students also need to make up their mind to produce a diagram of related housing concerns on the chosen housing theme; and they need to respond intellectually to the set of housing concerns with a theoretical framework. The framework is to be used to guide the literature review, and subsequently to guide the formulation of the overall blueprint on research methods. This is further clarified in the following diagram:

With regard to the diagram, examples on housing themes are: homelessness, housing policy, housing affordability and urban renewal. Examples of housing concerns are: negative impacts on (i) social stability and harmony, (ii) social justice, (iii) legitimate interests and rights of certain groups of people in the society, (iv) quality of residential life of a specific group of people in the society. The set of related housing concerns is to be portrayed in a housing-related concerns diagram. Examples of housing-related academic topics are: housing affordability, gentrification, urban renewal, housing policy, social class and gender [In this regard, students need to pick up more specific academic ideas on these academic topics via literature review]. The set of related academic topics decided on by the researcher is portrayed in a theoretical framework. The theoretical framework makes use these academic topics and associated academic ideas to conduct specific theory-driven evaluation as a way to address the housing-related concerns.

The diagram shown above is based on the agile literature review approach (ALRA) developed by this writer.
