How to come up with ALRA zone 2 items that are useful: some advice


When constructing a management-concerns diagram for their MBA dissertation project formulation, quite a number of students have difficulties to come up with the agile literature review approach  (ALRA) management-concerns diagram items, notably for zone 2 (organizational capabilities).


My suggestions as follows:

I. Increase theoretical sensitivity on organizational capabilities by studying the topic of core competence and the resource-based view. [also be familiar with the management subjects covered in the MBA programme:



II. Discuss with some other case study stakeholders to obtain some additional management-concerns items for consideration.

III. Study the ALRA dissertation samples to learn some illustrative examples on the management-concerns diagrams.

IV. Consider the following typical zone 2 items (28 items in total) and come up with your situation-specific ones for zone 2:

  1. human resource management competence
  2. human resource development competence
  3. training and development competence
  4. managerial competence
  5. leadership competence
  6. marketing management competence
  7. marketing communication management competence
  8. market development competence
  9. strategic management competence
  10. innovation capability
  11. product management competence
  12. product development competence
  13. IT management competence
  14. Supply chain management competence
  15. Distribution management competence
  16. Operations management competence
  17. TQM competence (or maturity)
  18. Financial management competence
  19. Management accounting function capability
  20. Business model capability
  21. Business partnership management competence
  22. IT infrastructure capability
  23. Information systems management competence
  24. Business intelligence management competence
  25. Project management competence
  26. Corporate risk management competence
  27. Corporate crisis management competence
  28. Corporate turnaround management competence

Consider the zone 2 items above and try to come up with your own zone 2 items. You need to ensure that your formulated zone 2 items can be related to some of the items in your management-concerns diagram.
